About us

Ratio is a law entrance test prep platform committed to making high-quality legal test prep, especially for CLAT and AILET, free and accessible to everyone.

Paid prep will always exist, and it may serve many well. But we believe that a free, open and high-quality prep platform should also exist as public infrastructure. We didn’t find one that met that standard, so we decided to build one.

Ratio is made available without branding, paywalls, or ads. There are no premium tiers, no hidden fees, and no marketing funnels.

Our philosophy

At its core, Ratio is built in the spirit of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), even though it isn’t software.

While FOSS is a term rooted in the software world, the underlying values it promotes apply to Ratio as well. We have tried to build Ratio on the ethos of openness, transparency, and accessibility that FOSS champions.

Ratio is also built on Moodle an open-source learning management system.

What are we building?

Phase 1: We have made past year CLAT and AILET papers accessible and easy to use in the form of mocks/quizzes with feedback. Many of these papers were sourced from official websites or obtained through Right to Information (RTI) requests, details of which can be accessed here, here and here.

The specific/custom feedback for each question (right and wrong answer explanations) as well as specific tags for questions are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Phase 2: In Phase 2, we aim to add resources like concept explainers, mock tests, and discussion forums, etc. All such content will be licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

How we work

Ratio is a small project. It is not backed by any institution, grant, or company at the moment.

So far, our expenses have been modest and personally funded. Going forward, we plan to maintain a simple cost tracker which includes hosting, domain fees, and any paid contributor support.

We are open to sharing the costs with others who believe in the mission.

How can you help?

We’re are always looking for volunteers with a high degree of ownership who can provide high quality content. Some areas where we need help are:

  • Teach a live class or record a high quality concept video
  • Share high-quality prep material
  • Make high quality mocks
  • Help organize, format, or improve existing content
  • Contribute ideas, explanations, or tools that make legal prep more accessible and less overwhelming
  • Managing the platform and scheduling of classes, etc.

The list above is indicative and we are open to other ideas. We believe that high quality work deserves compensation, even if modest, especially when it’s helping build a platform for the public good. We're committed to offering fair and transparent payment but are open to voluntary contributions as well.

Please however note, like most public good projects, Ratio works on trust, ownership, and self-direction. We do not have the bandwidth to manage deadlines, follow up repeatedly, or coordinate large teams. If you take something on, we assume you will follow through with care and clarity.
